A World-Class Weak-Grid Problem: from 20% Curtailment to Full Output
20% curtailment → full output; changed LVRT certification practice
Client: Envision Energy (smart wind power; in-house product R&D)
Context
Distributed wind farms connected to long 10 kV feeders faced voltage-stability limits that forced permanent 20% curtailment — a control problem regarded as world-class in the industry.
Approach
Redesigned the turbines’ adaptive control strategy; built a high-fidelity simulation and model-consistency assessment system so that numerical simulation could stand in for part of the physical certification tests.
Results
From 20% curtailment to full grid output, with a 500-hour zero-fault acceptance run; dozens of turbine models earned LVRT certification from China EPRI on the strength of numerical simulation, helping change industry certification practice. In the same period, led 1.5–4 MW converters from zero to 3,000+ units in mass production (over RMB 2B cumulative output value).
